Tesla will launch its steering wheel-free and pedal-free autonomous driving model, the Cybercab, in Austin on September 3 local time. Previous reports indicate that the Cybercab has already completed road tests and employee ride-alongs, with plans to first open to employees before making it available to the public. Currently, the Austin Robotaxi fleet mainly consists of 186 modified Model Y vehicles, and Cybercab will gradually be added to the fleet; however, mass production within the year will be limited and commercialization approval is still pending.

Tesla is accelerating the launch of its dedicated self-driving vehicle, the Cybercab, which may change its Robotaxi operating model.

On August 22, Tesla announced on X that it will hold a Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas on September 3 local time. This model, designed for complete autonomous driving, has no steering wheel or brake pedal and is Tesla’s first dedicated Robotaxi vehicle. It is expected to join the Austin fleet, gradually changing the current Model Y-dominated operation.

According to The Information, Tesla plans to proceed in two steps: initially offering Cybercab rides to employees on public roads, and a few days later officially opening the service to the public.

Preparations Largely Completed Before Launch

Ahead of the official launch, Tesla has already completed multiple preparations. Since June, Cybercab prototypes have been road-tested in several locations across the United States, including Austin. In July, the company began offering test rides for employees on private roads within the Austin campus and gathered feedback, following a process similar to the one before the Robotaxi’s debut last year.

Meanwhile, Tesla has recently provided training to emergency responders in Austin, instructing them on how to handle and move the vehicles in case of emergencies.

Because the Cybercab lacks both a steering wheel and brake pedal, if the autonomous driving system encounters an issue, there is no way for a human driver to take control inside the vehicle. Tesla says the company will equip remote operators to intervene in emergencies.

This also raises regulatory questions. For reference, Amazon’s Zoox only received permission from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in July of this year to use vehicles without steering wheels and pedals for commercial passenger service; previously, only free test rides were permitted. It is currently unclear whether Tesla has obtained similar approval and whether Cybercab will launch with paid operations directly.

How Will It Interface with the Model Y Fleet?

Currently, Tesla operates its Robotaxi service in Austin using modified Model Y vehicles, including features such as self-cleaning cameras and a second communication unit. According to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla has registered 186 Model Y vehicles locally for Robotaxi service.

In comparison, the Cybercab does not require additional modifications and can theoretically reduce operating complexity. However, it remains unclear whether Tesla will gradually replace Model Y with Cybercab, or continue to operate both in parallel.

It is also noteworthy that Tesla began Cybercab production in Texas last month, but subsequently stated that mass production would not be achieved in 2026. Musk explained in the July earnings call that since Cybercab uses an entirely new platform, Tesla must first accumulate exclusive driving data before expanding deployment further.
