  1. The yield on Italy's 10-year government bond has risen to 4.04%, marking its highest level since March 2026. Over the past four weeks, it has increased by about 37.6 basis points, with a year-on-year gain of 56.8 basis points. Bonds from peripheral eurozone countries continue to face pressure as the market reprices risks related to energy dependence and fiscal vulnerability.
  2. The yield on Canada’s 10-year government bond has simultaneously climbed to 3.60%, also hitting a high since May 2026. It has risen approximately 15.4 basis points in the past four weeks and accumulated about 3 basis points over the past year. Although the increase is relatively moderate, it likewise reflects the transmission of US Treasury movements and elevated commodity prices supporting inflation expectations.
  3. The synchronized rise in long-term bond yields in both countries is not an isolated case. The global sovereign bond market is now facing three major drivers: Middle East tensions pushing up energy costs and reinforcing inflation persistence; Japan’s interest rate normalization spilling over into global risk-free rates; and a supply shock as major economies expand bond issuance for defense and energy security needs.
  4. The short-term cumulative increase in Italy’s bond yield has been particularly sharp, highlighting the market’s sensitivity to the country’s high debt stock and reliance on energy imports. In contrast, Canada's uptick mainly reflects the tracking of US Treasury trends and the transmission effect of higher oil prices. Going forward, attention will focus on how monetary policy directions from the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada will further shape the yield curve.
