(1) Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Kalibaf, stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States fulfills the conditions outlined in the interim agreement signed with Iran in June, including lifting the blockade on Iranian ports, removing oil sanctions, releasing Iran’s frozen assets, and ceasing all forms of threats and military actions. (2) This memorandum of understanding was reached on June 17, but it quickly broke down due to disputes over control of the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a vital passage for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. On July 7, the US announced the termination of the agreement, and Iran also announced the suspension of the agreement one week later. (3) According to the original agreement, both parties committed to negotiate a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and other broader issues within a maximum of 60 days, with an option for mutual extension. However, senior Iranian officials have said that, as diplomatic efforts have stalled, Iran will shift to a fully offensive military posture.
