S&P 500 options signal increased volatility ahead of Nvidia earnings and Jackson Hole symposium

The S&P 500 has been sleepwalking through August, with daily swings priced in at less than 0.8% and the VIX hovering around 14, its lowest reading of 2026. The index is trading near record highs.

Two events landing in the same 72-hour window are poised to test that tranquility: Nvidia’s Q2 FY2027 earnings report, scheduled for release after market close on August 26, and the Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium running August 27-29. Options markets are already flagging the stretch as the most consequential volatility catalyst between now and September.

The Nvidia effect

Nvidia has become the kind of company whose quarterly results move not just its own stock, but the broader market. As the dominant supplier of AI training and inference chips, its earnings have effectively become a referendum on the health of the entire AI capital expenditure cycle.

Historical data backs this up. Nvidia’s earnings releases have consistently produced significant single-day stock movements, often several percentage points in either direction.

Jackson Hole: more than a mountain retreat

The Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole symposium has a long track record of market-moving moments. Fed Chair Powell and other central bank officials have historically used the Wyoming gathering to telegraph shifts in monetary policy thinking, sometimes months before formal action.

This year’s theme, “Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy,” suggests the agenda will extend beyond traditional rate-setting discussions. The focus on financial innovation could touch on topics ranging from digital payment infrastructure to the regulatory framework around emerging financial technologies.

Coming just one day after Nvidia’s earnings hit the tape, Jackson Hole speeches will land on a market that may already be processing a significant information shock. The compound effect of these two catalysts landing back-to-back is what makes the August 26-29 window so notable.

What the options market is saying

The current state of S&P 500 options pricing tells a story of complacency with a caveat. Through month-end, implied daily moves remain below 0.8%, reflecting the broader low-volatility environment that has characterized much of the summer. The VIX at 14 puts it well below its long-term average, suggesting that hedging demand has been minimal and that institutional investors are largely comfortable with their positioning.

But beneath that surface calm, the term structure of volatility tells a more nuanced story. Options spanning the Nvidia earnings date and Jackson Hole window carry a premium relative to surrounding days, indicating that traders are selectively hedging around these specific events even as they remain broadly positioned for stability.

What to watch

The sequencing matters. Nvidia reports Tuesday evening, meaning Wednesday’s open will be the first opportunity for the broader market to digest the results. Jackson Hole kicks off on Wednesday and runs through Friday, with Powell’s keynote historically landing on Friday morning. That gives the market three consecutive sessions where new information could reshape positioning.

For equity investors, the key question is whether Nvidia’s results validate the current AI spending trajectory or introduce doubt. Revenue guidance and commentary on data center demand will matter more than the backward-looking quarterly numbers.

On the macro side, the Jackson Hole symposium’s focus on financial innovation could carry implications for how regulators approach emerging payment systems and digital financial infrastructure. Powell’s remarks on the economic outlook and the path of interest rates will be dissected word by word, but the innovation-themed panels may also yield insights into the Fed’s thinking on technology-driven changes to the financial system.

U.S. Human Resource Stocks Strongly Rebound: AI Resume Boom Makes Recruitment Companies Even More Valuable!

AI has not disrupted the US recruitment industry; instead, the proliferation of AI-generated resumes has increased the value of screening, creating new demand for HR companies. Recruitment stocks such as ManpowerGroup and Robert Half have reported better-than-expected earnings, with their share prices rebounding strongly from lows. AI has also become an efficiency tool for the industry, but valuations are under pressure after the rebound. The long-term trend will depend on the recovery of the US labor market and whether recruitment companies can truly benefit from AI.
