Reviewing former picks is essential to disciplined investing, revealing what worked, what changed, and how technical setups evolved. Re-evaluating trade ideas helps us isolate high-probability patterns, benchmark our execution, and continuously sharpen our process.
In this update, we revisit the following former stock picks and examine how they performed:
Casey's General Stores, introduced by Teresa Rivas last December.
Tradeweb Markets, reviewed by Jacob Sonenshine in April.
Motorola Solutions, covered by Todd Chanko in June.
This note revisits former stock picks from a technical perspective, focusing on those that favor buying opportunities. Read the last edition here.
Casey's General Stores
The consumer discretionary play is up 16% year to date but has declined 25% over the past three months. Much of that weakness centered on its latest earnings reaction which saw a 14% drop on Sept. 9, creating an attractive entry. It has declined in back to back months for the first time in nearly three years. The stock is up 15% since our recommendation. We're still bullish.
Looking at the daily time frame, the ratio chart shows underperformance versus the SPDR S&P Retail ETF since mid-June, erasing much of its first-half advance. Round number theory came into play at the $900 level following a 20% post-earnings surge on June 10. The very next session printed a narrow-range spinning top candle, a classic signal of buyer fatigue, initiating a steep 300-point drawdown that was further compounded by rising fuel and transportation input costs at its locations.
While a recent death cross registered, a potential double-bottom base is now taking shape as price action stabilizes more than 30% below its 52-week high. High-conviction bottoming signals have emerged along this floor, highlighted by a cluster of doji candles on Sept. 9, Sept. 22, and Oct. 5 to Oct. 6, alongside a confirmed bullish morning star on Sept. 17.
With downside momentum abating the stock could reach $850 by mid 2027, a 32% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $615. Casey General Stores was trading around $642 Wednesday.
Tradeweb Markets
The electronic trading platform operator has gained 9% over the past month despite just a modest 2% return over the past year. This recent momentum is fueled by increased focus on Treasury yield movements and growing institutional appetite for long-duration bond positions following an extended period of bearish sentiment. The stock is down 8% since our recommendation.
Looking at the daily chart, price action is constructing the right side of a potential cup base on its ratio chart against the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF. Earlier weakness materialized following a breakdown below a bull flag in late March, a textbook reminder that false moves frequently trigger fast, impulsive moves in the opposite direction. From that peak, TW underwent a 29% drawdown that ultimately terminated when a bullish harami printed on June 26.
That reversal launched a bullish ascending triangle characterized by a sequence of higher lows. Accumulation within this base was subsequently confirmed by a bullish engulfing candle on July 31 and a doji on Sept. 23. With the 200-day simple moving average now flatlining, signaling the end of its potential downtrend, the stock is coiling directly beneath its $110.00 ascending triangle trigger.
This stock could reach $130 by early 2027, a 19% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $105. Tradeweb Markets was trading around $110 Wednesday.
Motorola Solutions
The communications equipment provider is up 17% this year, though price action has pulled back 9% from its 52-week high on Sept. 1. While the stock is currently navigating a six-week losing streak, overall damage remains contained, leaving our position up 8% since our initial recommendation.
Looking at the daily ratio chart reflects steady outperformance against industry peer Axon Enterprise since July. Earlier in its advance, MSI attempted to break out above a $490.24 cup-base pivot that launched after three consecutive spinning tops between March 2 and March 4. The base lows were firmly anchored by a May 11 bullish harami and a confirmed morning star pattern on June 24.
However, that initial breakout proved short lived, failing after just a single session on Sept. 1. This immediate bull trap signaled near-term exhaustion, as a bearish engulfing candle printed the following day to spark a 2.5% single-session drop.
Following a gap fill from the Aug. 5 post-earnings session, the stock is now carving out a double-bottom base with a well-defined $478.94 breakout trigger. One can enter here and the stock could reach $533 by early 2027, a 19% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $435. Motorola Solutions was trading around $447 Wednesday.
