MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/14 14:41
10:41 AM EDT, 10/14/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The S&P/TSX Composite Index was lower Wednesday morning as shares in the base metal sector posted the biggest decline as related commodity prices fell. The sector dropped 2.6% on last look as copper prices fell 0.7% on last look. In precious metals, gold prices dropped 1.5%, after US Consumer Price Index data for September rose to 0.6% month over month. Silver prices fell 5.1%. Energy shares made the biggest gains mid-morning, up 0.3%, as crude prices edged up. The International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report Wednesday noting that despite falling oil demand, global supply levels will still be below 2025 levels. "Despite lower demand, oil market balances are forecast to remain in deficit through the end of the year, with constrained middle distillate supplies likely to persist well into 2027," the IEA said. In economic news, the value of Canadian building permits rose by CA$1.1 billion, or 8.8% on the month, to CA$13.6 billion in August, Statistics Canada said. The increase was led by stronger residential construction plans.
