Oct 14 (Reuters) - Apple AAPL.O has asked a federal judge in San Diego to overturn a $5.7 billion patent verdict won by Taction Technology against the tech giant last month over the haptic feedback in Apple's iPhones and Apple Watches.
Apple told the court on Tuesday that the verdict, the largest patent verdict in US history by more than $3 billion, was "untethered to any evidence at all"
Spokespeople and attorneys for Taction did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday
San Diego-based Taction, which uses its haptic technology in headphones and gaming headsets, filed the lawsuit in 2021
A jury determined on September 25 that Apple's Taptic Engine, which creates tapping vibrations, infringed two Taction patents
Apple told the court on Tuesday that there was insufficient evidence to support the award, and said that US District Judge Todd Robinson told the companies' attorneys before the verdict was read that he was "not sure that the figure that appears on the verdict form is what the jury meant to convey"
Several other US patent verdicts worth more than $1 billion have been overturned or reduced in the past
The case is Taction Technology v. Apple Inc, US District Court for the Southern District of California, No. 3:21-cv-00812
For Taction: Lance Yang of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan
For Apple: Roger Denning of Fish & Richardson
