Palliser Urges Samsung to Issue US Shares to Fund Preferred Buybacks

07:45 PM EDT, 10/13/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Palliser Capital urged Samsung Electronics to list shares in the US and use the proceeds to repurchase preferred shares, aiming to narrow their discount to common stock, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing a statement from the hedge fund. Palliser founder James Smith said issuing American depositary receipts at a premium could fund additional preferred-share repurchases and cancellations. Samsung's preferred shares trade at a discount of more than 20% to its common shares. Palliser also urged Samsung and Hyundai Motor to prioritize preferred-share buybacks and set explicit targets for reducing the discounts as part of their shareholder-return plans. The hedge fund said narrowing the discounts could help improve capital efficiency and support South Korea's market reform efforts.
