At 20:30 Beijing time on October 14, the US September CPI data will be released, followed by PPI at the same time the next day. As a core input for Federal Reserve decisions, this data set will directly shape the market’s expectations battle between “soft landing” and “reinflation.”

I. Core Expectations and Background

The market broadly expects September headline CPI to rise 0.5%–0.6% month-over-month, with year-over-year inflation around 3.6%, mainly driven by energy prices pushed higher by Middle East geopolitical tensions. Core CPI (excluding volatile items) is expected to slow to 0.2% month-over-month, with the year-over-year rate holding steady at 2.4%.

At the same time, August PPI already stood at a high 5.4% year-over-year, showing that upstream cost pressures remain significant. Although the Fed hiked rates by 25 bp in September to a target range of 3.75%–4.00%, and the minutes hinted that further hikes are still possible by year-end, the market currently assigns a relatively high probability that the Fed will stay on hold at the October meeting.

The real focus of the data, therefore, is whether the inflation uptick is a temporary energy supply shock or a signal of rebounding core stickiness.

II. Three Scenarios and Benefiting Sectors

Based on how the data prints, we outline three trading scenarios:

  1. Broadly hotter than expected (hawkish tilt):
If both headline and core CPI come in hot, confirming sticky inflation, rate-hike expectations will rise quickly. In this case, energy stocks with earnings leverage become the preferred defensive play. Key names to watch: Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Schlumberger (SLB). Higher oil prices would directly boost their profits.
  2. Headline hot, core cooling (base case / dovish tilt):
If the market interprets the data as an energy-driven supply shock rather than overheating demand, the probability of the Fed pausing further hikes will rise significantly. This would ease valuation pressure on long-duration growth stocks and favor AI and tech leaders. Nvidia (NVDA), AMD, Broadcom (AVGO), Microsoft (MSFT), and Amazon (AMZN) could see a valuation recovery rally.
  3. Smooth cost pass-through (industrial rotation):
If PPI shows upstream costs are being successfully passed downstream, industrial and transportation stocks with strong pricing power could gain short-term opportunities. Names such as Caterpillar (CAT), Deere (DE), Union Pacific (UNP), and FedEx (FDX) stand to benefit because they can effectively pass costs through, making the fundamental logic cleaner.

III. How to Position More Steadily?

We believe market volatility typically rises sharply around these releases. Investors should avoid one-sided heavy positioning and set strict stop-losses to guard against sudden reversals. Here are simple strategy ideas for reference:

  • Higher-conviction themes: Over the medium to long term, continue focusing on the two main lines of “AI computing infrastructure” and “energy security hedge.”
  • Positioning optimization: If core CPI keeps cooling, you can moderately increase leverage exposure to tech growth stocks; if core rebounds, quickly shift toward energy or shorter-duration value stocks for defense.
  • Follow-up tracking: This CPI/PPI release is only the opening act. Closely monitor the subsequent PCE price index and nonfarm payrolls data to confirm the ultimate path of Fed policy.

Summary: In an uncertain environment, look for relative certainty and use volatility to position in leaders. This remains the optimal approach for macro trading at present. Trade well!

Related US Stock Targets Table:

Scenario Beneficiary Tickers Logic
Headline & core both hotter than expected (stronger inflation stickiness) XOM, CVX, COP, SLB, EOG Oil price and inflation upside logic strengthens; energy companies’ earnings leverage benefits directly; rising rate-hike expectations further support the sector
Headline hot, core soft (temporary energy shock) NVDA, AMD, AVGO, MSFT, AMZN Market interprets as supply shock rather than overheating demand; Fed pause probability rises; long-duration AI/tech growth stocks see valuation recovery
PPI shows cost pass-through to downstream CAT, DE, UNP, CSX, FDX Upstream price pressure transmits to industrial and transportation segments; related companies gain short-term cost pass-through and earnings improvement opportunities

The Iranian Navy Deputy Commander stated on Monday that U.S. military vessels, including destroyers and aircraft carriers, have significantly withdrawn. On the same day, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Iran is reviewing the U.S. proposals, but the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain unchanged. According to reports, with the rotation of U.S. aircraft carriers, only the USS Washington is currently deployed in the Middle East. As of last Sunday, a total of 24 vessels were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters within two weeks, marking the most severe wave of incidents since the onset of the Iran conflict—far surpassing the previous two-week peak of 13 ships. Oil exports through the strait have dropped by more than 80% compared to the average daily level in September.
