TRON activates post-quantum signatures as Ethereum targets 2029 overhaul

TRON and Ethereum are accelerating efforts to prepare their blockchains against potential threats from quantum computing, a technology that, while still in early stages, could eventually compromise traditional cryptographic standards. TRON has become one of the first public blockchains to introduce post-quantum cryptography on its testnet and claims its solution is ready for full deployment on the mainnet.

TRON’s fast-track quantum defense

Founded by Justin Sun, TRON is a decentralized blockchain platform known for its high throughput and support for assets like Tether (USDT). Sun recently announced that post-quantum cryptography measures are now live on the TRON testnet, awaiting only a final governance vote and mainnet approval.

In July 2026, TRON introduced Committee Proposal No. 20628 with its GreatVoyage-v4.8.2-PQ1-build1 update on the Nile testnet. This upgrade implements two signature schemes standardized by NIST: FN-DSA-512 (based on Falcon-512) and ML-DSA-44 (based on Dilithium). The technical designs are outlined in TIP-899, which remains in draft and keeps these features optional by default, allowing wallet developers to begin testing without forcing mandatory adoption.

These new post-quantum signatures will support key blockchain functions, including transaction signing, block production, peer-to-peer handshakes, and TRON Virtual Machine verification. Code for these upgrades was released open source in June, giving ecosystem participants time to experiment with quantum-safe tools ahead of any potential technological breakthrough, sometimes referred to as “Q-Day.”

TRON is willing to accept a major increase in bandwidth and file sizes in exchange for greater preparedness: public keys for Falcon-512 will be 896 bytes and its signatures up to 667 bytes, while Dilithium keys and signatures reach 1,312 and 2,420 bytes, respectively—roughly ten times the size of Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) equivalents.

Mini dictionary: NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), a US agency, endorses security and cryptography standards, including the Falcon and Dilithium signature schemes designed to counter future quantum computing threats.

While this approach significantly increases bandwidth and storage costs, as well as reducing potential throughput from about 2,000 transactions per second (TPS) to nearly 400 TPS for Falcon-512 and to approximately 173 TPS for Dilithium, TRON’s architecture lets stakeholders test these defenses without full activation on mainnet. The platform requires further audits and Super Representative consensus, pushing a possible launch date beyond Q3 2026.

Signature Scheme Public Key Size Signature Size Estimated TPS
ECDSA 33 bytes 65 bytes ~2,000
Falcon-512 896 bytes Up to 667 bytes ~400
Dilithium-2 1,312 bytes 2,420 bytes ~173

Ethereum’s long-term quantum resistance plan

Ethereum, the largest programmable blockchain, is relying on a more gradual response, aiming for full protocol-level quantum resistance by December 2029. A dedicated team, including researcher Justin Drake, is leading this initiative, supported by $2 million in funding. The team’s approach centers on overhauling core cryptographic primitives and phasing in new standards across multiple layers of the protocol.

Their roadmap includes replacing BLS signatures for proof-of-stake validators and KZG commitments for data storage, while applying zero-knowledge techniques for performance. Incremental migration using account abstraction (EIP-8141) will allow Ethereum users to rotate cryptographic keys and further isolate transaction authorization from gas payment, a move expected to preserve network continuity.

Ethereum client developers have less than three years to test and validate these so-called “lattice”-based signature schemes before a planned hard fork introduces post-quantum features. The scale of Ethereum’s DeFi, restaking, and layer-2 economy means that the protocol’s quantum migration will require extensive engineering, vetting, and cross-client collaboration.

Mini dictionary: Lattice-based cryptography forms the basis for many post-quantum digital signatures, using hard mathematical problems believed to withstand attacks from quantum computers.

Regulatory attention and industry impact

Regulators, including Europol, have issued warnings about quantum risks, prompting asset managers and blockchain developers alike to treat quantum security as a critical infrastructure need. Both TRON and Ethereum see future-proofing core infrastructure as vital to maintaining their roles as settlement layers for tokenized assets amid ongoing regulatory and competitive pressures.

TRON’s more rapid and flexible, governance-driven process could accelerate readiness, while Ethereum’s layered and community-driven model is expected to deliver solutions at a slower pace. Mainnet deployment across both chains will depend on further audits and stakeholder approvals.
