British builders grow more pessimistic: PMI rises to an eight-month high, but major projects are still being collectively shelved

UK builders became more pessimistic in September. The PMI rose to an eight-month high of 46.1 but remains in contraction territory; weak orders and Middle East conflicts are causing companies to delay project decisions.

Zhihu Finance APP has noted that a key survey shows British builders became less optimistic about the outlook in September, with many postponing major project decisions, even though there are signs the industry's downturn is easing.

The S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to an eight-month high of 46.1, up from 44.3 in August. This result is better than economists' expectations of 44.9, but the sector still remains below the 50 threshold that separates output growth from contraction.

Although the residential construction sub-index improved, it remains deeply in contraction territory, continuing a prolonged slump that has dashed the Labour Government's hopes of leading a housing boom.

The downturn in the UK construction industry continued in September

Rising interest rates, inflation, and weak orders have dampened the sector's growth prospects, with companies postponing decisions due to uncertainty caused by Middle East conflicts. The future activity index fell to its lowest since May.

Tim Moore, Director of Economics at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said, "Total new orders were relatively weak in September, and construction firms reported longer sales conversion cycles with clients delaying major project decisions." "This was attributed to weak demand and geopolitical tensions, with some businesses also noting severe input cost increases putting them under pressure."

When the war between the US and Iran broke out and inflationary pressures surged once again, the construction industry was already in a prolonged slump. It has consistently been the weakest link among the UK’s private sectors covered by the PMI survey, while the services and manufacturing sectors have so far weathered the shock of the conflict.

Just before the outbreak of war, builders saw their costs rise at the slowest pace in seven months. However, Moore warned that the trend of easing price pressures "seems unlikely to persist given the recent rise in fuel prices and transportation costs."

Updated version 2 - McKesson and CD&R will privatize infusion therapy service provider Option Care in a $5.8 billion deal.

Reuters, October 6 – Pharmaceutical distributor McKesson (MCK.N) and private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) reached an agreement on Tuesday to take infusion therapy provider Option Care Health (OPCH.O) private, in a deal valued at approximately $5.8 billions, including debt. The acquisition offer of $32.05 per share represents a 37.1% premium over Option Care's most recent closing price. As a US pharmaceutical distributor, McKesson is seeking to expand its healthcare services portfolio, and this transaction marks its latest move. It also follows the private equity fund’s previous acquisition of another home health service provider, Enhabit. Option Care Health is the largest independent provider of infusion therapy services in the US, serving over 308,000 patients annually through more than 197 service centers, offering home and outpatient infusions, specialty pharmacy, and care for complex conditions. With an aging population and a growing number of patients choosing care outside costly hospital settings, demand for home healthcare in the US continues to increase. Upon closing, CD&R will hold the majority stake, while McKesson will retain a minority interest. Option Care Health will continue to operate as an independent company led by its existing management team. As per transaction terms, McKesson will invest about $1.4 billions to acquire a 49% stake, with the right to acquire CD&R's remaining 51% interest at a later date. According to Michael Cherny, an analyst at Leerink Partners, this deal positions McKesson in line with the trend of healthcare services shifting away from hospitals and medical institutions to alternative sites of care. Additionally, given McKesson’s current operation of Canada’s leading infusion and injection network, Inviva, the transaction extends its reach in the US home infusion market. McKesson’s oncology and multi-specialty business segments, including infusion services, posted revenues of $14.2 billions in the most recent quarter, up 33% year-over-year, benefiting from specialty drug distribution and contributions from acquisitions. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, after which Option Care Health will become a private company.

BUZZ-BridgeBio shares rise as FDA initiates priority review for dwarfism drug

On October 6th, shares of pharmaceutical company BridgeBio Pharma (BBIO.O) rose 2.5% in pre-market trading to $67.80.
