Samsung's HBM4 is priced at $4 per gigabit, more than three times that of HBM3E (approximately $1.5), driven by its stable achievement of the industry-leading transmission speeds of 11.7 Gbps and peak 13 Gbps. TrendForce predicts that the average HBM price will soar 121% next year, and Micron also confirms the price hike trend. Samsung's move aims to use performance differentiation to break SK Hynix's market dominance, shifting the HBM competition logic from “supply qualification” to “performance premium.”

Samsung Electronics is making a return to the forefront of the high-bandwidth memory market competition with an aggressive pricing strategy.

On October 2, according to Korea's financial media outlet Maeil Business Newspaper, South Korea's chip giant Samsung Electronics has set next year's HBM4 supply price at the mid-to-high $4 per gigabit (Gb) range—a price more than three times that of its current flagship product HBM3E, which is around $1.50/Gb. Annual contract negotiations with major clients have already begun.

Behind this pricing signal is Samsung's high confidence in HBM4’s performance advantages. According to reports, sources in the semiconductor industry revealed that Samsung's HBM4 has stably achieved a data transfer rate of 11.7 Gbps, with a peak of up to 13 Gbps, positioning it at the top of the industry. Samsung’s strategy is to directly convert its ability to stably supply high-spec products into a price premium, aiming to use performance differentiation to reshape its pricing power in the HBM market.

Market research firm TrendForce predicts that, driven by an increase in the proportion of HBM4 and ongoing supply shortages, the average sales price (ASP) of HBM next year will rise 121% compared to this year. Micron Technology also mentioned in a recent earnings call the potential for significant HBM price increases next year. As Samsung accelerates the expansion of HBM4 supply, the competitive landscape in the HBM market, previously dominated by SK Hynix, is expected to intensify further.

Pricing Logic: Triple Premium Stems from Generational Leap and Performance Confidence

The pricing of Samsung's HBM4 is not merely a result of market maneuvering, but is based on a clear technological narrative.

According to reports, semiconductor industry insiders revealed that, when negotiating next year’s annual supply contracts for HBM4 with major clients recently, Samsung offered a price in the mid-to-high $4 per Gb range. By comparison, the market price of the current flagship HBM3E is approximately $1.50 per Gb, meaning the HBM4 quote exceeds it by more than three times.

Unlike traditional DRAM, HBM is mainly supplied through annual long-term contracts. Major clients and manufacturers negotiate next year’s supply volume and price in advance—clients lock in the required capacity, while manufacturers plan production accordingly. Currently, negotiations for next year’s main HBM supply volumes are largely complete, with price talks expected to conclude this month.

Samsung’s confidence in substantially raising prices comes from HBM4’s generational breakthrough in performance. The company’s HBM4 has stably achieved 11.7 Gbps data transfer rates, with peaks up to 13 Gbps—leading the industry. Samsung’s strategy is to immediately translate its ability to stably supply products exceeding competitors’ specifications into a price premium.

Shift in Competitive Logic: Paradigm Shift from “Quantity” to “Quality”

The debut of HBM4 marks a fundamental shift in the competitive logic of the HBM market.

Previously, the core of HBM market competition lay in passing quality certifications from major clients such as Nvidia and entering their supply chain, thereby continually expanding supply volume. But with HBM4, the memory performance requirements for AI accelerators have further increased, meaning that even among products of the same generation, differences in speed and power efficiency will be key variables in determining prices.

This shift is significant for Samsung. In the HBM3E era, Samsung long lagged behind SK Hynix, who established market leadership through earlier Nvidia certification and faster mass production. In the HBM4 arena, Samsung is trying to redefine the rules by leading in performance, shifting market focus from “who can supply” to “whose product is better.”

Supply and Demand Structure: AI Infrastructure Investment Expansion Supports Pricing

In addition to technological factors, the macro supply-demand landscape also strongly supports Samsung's aggressive pricing.

As global AI infrastructure investment continues to expand, HBM demand is rapidly growing, while supply expansion remains relatively limited. The overlap of supply shortages and the generational shift to HBM4 has created favorable conditions for price premiums on high-performance products.

Market research firm TrendForce predicts that, driven by both the increased proportion of HBM4 and supply shortages, next year’s average HBM sales price will rise 121% compared to this year. Micron Technology also explicitly mentioned in a recent earnings call the possibility of sharp HBM price increases next year, further confirming the industry’s overall expectation of an upward price trend.

For Samsung, the launch of HBM4 is not just a product iteration, but a strategic opportunity to enhance overall profitability by emphasizing “industry-leading performance.”

Market Pattern: SK Hynix’s Dominant Position Faces Challenge

Samsung’s offensive will directly impact SK Hynix’s existing advantages in the HBM market.

SK Hynix established market leadership in the HBM space by being the first to pass Nvidia certification during the HBM3E era and continually expanding supply. However, as Samsung accelerates HBM4 supply and launches price competition with high-spec products, the market battle between these two Korean chip giants is expected to heat up noticeably next year.

Competition in the HBM4 era will not be solely about supply chain qualifications, but rather a comprehensive contest involving performance, yield, and mass production capability. Whether Samsung can turn its current technical advantage into a substantial market share recovery will be one of the core variables to watch in the HBM market next year.
