Market Chatter: Federal Reserve Mulls Raising Bank Oversight Thresholds

MT newswireMT newswire2026/09/25 11:14
07:14 AM EDT, 09/25/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The US Federal Reserve is planning to increase the asset thresholds that prompt stricter oversight of big banks, Reuters reported Friday, citing four people with knowledge of the matter. The central bank could propose reindexing the highest threshold to nearly $1 trillion to account for inflation and economic growth. The move could help some lenders avoid additional regulatory costs and potentially encourage consolidation in the sector, according to the report. The plans could also involve raising the lower threshold closer to $150 billion. Under current rules, banks face stricter requirements when their assets reach $100 billion, $250 billion, and $700 billion, the report said. Banks that could benefit from the changes include U.S. Bancorp (USB), Capital One (COF), PNC Financial (PNC), Truist (TFC), Western Alliance (WAL), Zions (ZION), and Pinnacle Financial Partners (PNFP), the media outlet added. The Federal Reserve did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally. For the market, unless the issues of oil and interest rates are resolved, the AI narrative is "almost irrelevant."
