UBS Calls Swiss Parliament's Proposed Capital Requirements 'Excessive'

08:13 AM EDT, 09/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- UBS Group AG (UBS) said Wednesday that the decision by the Swiss Parliament's Council of States to further tighten Swiss capital requirements would be "excessive" if confirmed at the conclusion of the ongoing parliamentary process. If implemented, the proposed requirement would require UBS AG to back foreign participations with 90% CET1 capital. UBS said this would require about $16 billion of additional CET1 capital. That amount would come on top of roughly $2 billion in additional CET1 capital required under ordinance-level measures announced earlier this year. The Swiss banking giant must also hold roughly $15 billion of previously disclosed CET1 capital under existing rules after its acquisition of Credit Suisse. "This political outcome is not a compromise and fails to address the root causes of the Credit Suisse collapse," UBS said. "It disregards the serious concerns expressed by the overwhelming majority of respondents in the democratic consultation process, which included all business representatives, the relevant employee associations and most cantons."
