In after-hours trading on Friday, the stock prices of three companies with mining and energy projects in Greenland surged sharply. This came after U.S. President Trump announced a security agreement with Denmark and the Arctic territory.

According to Zhitong Financial APP, after-hours trading on Friday saw shares of three companies with mining and energy projects in Greenland surge sharply. This followed President Trump’s announcement of a security agreement with Denmark and the Arctic territory. Greenland Energy (GLND.US) soared 119% after hours, Greenland Mines (GLMN.US) rose 58%, and Critical Metals (CRML.US) climbed 20%.

This rally appears to reflect investors’ expectations that an expanded US presence in Greenland could bring more political support, infrastructure investment, and financing opportunities to the local resources sector. However, the agreement does not announce any funding, licenses, or commercial deals specifically for these three companies.

Trump stated that the agreement would give the US a permanent role in Greenland’s security affairs and prevent rivals from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments on the island without US approval. He also said the US would begin developing a larger military presence there.

The agreement is expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Full terms are yet to be disclosed.

Denmark and Greenland provided more limited descriptions of the arrangement than Trump. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the arrangement respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede said it recognizes the territory’s interests.

For investors, the market reaction highlights how Greenland-related stocks have become closely tied to US national security policy. The island holds reserves of rare earths, precious metals, and other resources used in defense systems, electronics, and energy technologies. However, Friday’s rally was mainly based on market interpretation of the agreement’s potential impact rather than any immediate improvement in the companies’ financials or projects.

Greenland Mines

Greenland Mines owns the Skaergaard project in southeastern Greenland, which contains gold, palladium, and platinum resources. The company also recently completed its acquisition of the Sarfartoq rare earth project in southwestern Greenland.

Sarfartoq is expected to mainly target neodymium and praseodymium, two elements used for manufacturing permanent magnets needed in EVs, wind turbines, and military equipment. Greenland Mines estimates the project could generate up to $2.05 billion in pre-tax net present value under a high-output scenario.

The company issued a statement Friday welcoming the security agreement, saying it reinforces Greenland’s strategic importance to the US.

Critical Metals

Critical Metals owns the Tanbreez rare earth project in southern Greenland. The company claims Tanbreez is one of the world’s largest known heavy rare earth element deposits.

In May, Critical Metals signed a 15-year agreement to supply rare earth concentrate to REalloys, equivalent to 15% of Tanbreez’s planned annual output. As Washington seeks to reduce supply chain dependence on China, the project has also drawn the interest of the US Export-Import Bank.

Investors may view the new security framework as reducing the geopolitical uncertainties around Tanbreez and improving its prospects for US government assistance. However, the agreement itself did not announce new financing for the project.

Greenland Energy

Greenland Energy is an early-stage oil and gas exploration company focused on the Jameson Land Basin in eastern Greenland. The company intends to secure financing for exploratory wells in exchange for majority project interests.

The company’s share price saw the largest increase of the day, more than doubling in after-hours trading on Friday. The size of the surge indicates speculative interest in companies offering direct Greenland exposure, rather than reaction to specific company developments.

Due to environmental concerns, Greenland stopped issuing new oil and gas exploration licenses in 2021, but some older licenses remain valid. Greenland Energy will still require regulatory approval before beginning drilling plans.

This makes the company the most speculative among the three Greenland-related plays. While a greater US military and infrastructure presence could eventually improve access to remote areas, it does not supersede Greenland’s approvals process or guarantee discovery of commercial quantities of oil.

After-hours trading can be highly volatile due to lower stock liquidity. Therefore, gains may narrow or reverse when regular trading resumes. Investors will also be watching the final agreement language, as well as any follow-up announcements regarding US financing, permits, or infrastructure that could affect Greenland resource projects.
