Boeing has finished the first landing gear exchange for its 737 Max jet, extending the planemaker's existing maintenance program to the newest generation of its single-aisle aircraft.

For the exchange, Boeing delivered overhauled and certified main and nose landing gear assemblies to American Airlines, the companies said Monday.

The move extends Boeing's landing gear exchange program to its 737 Max jets. With the program, Boeing offers customers an alternative to buying and warehousing expensive spare gear, allowing airlines to avoid in-place overhauls and the risk of extended groundings.

"Extending the program to the 737 MAX gives operators another proven tool to shorten downtime, manage costs and align heavy maintenance with operational needs," said William Ampofo, senior vice president, parts and distribution, and supply chain at Boeing Global Services.
