According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, recent sales data shows that as traditional car manufacturers withdraw from the electric vehicle sector, Tesla (TSLA.US) is once again expanding its share of the US electric vehicle market. Data from Motor Intelligence shows that Tesla has regained more than half of the US electric vehicle market, with its share reaching 52% in the first eight months of 2026, up from 43% in the same period last year. Nevertheless, Tesla has not escaped the overall market downturn. So far this year, its US sales reached 325,351 vehicles, a 16% decrease year-on-year. However, the overall electric vehicle market contracted even more sharply, dropping by 30%. Tesla once accounted for more than 80% of US electric vehicle sales, but in recent years, as established automakers like Hyundai, Ford, and General Motors launched electric vehicle models, its market share has continuously declined. In 2025, Tesla’s share fell to a record low of 41%; at that time, Musk’s involvement in politics and cooperation with the Trump administration to downsize the federal government led some buyers to distance themselves, with protests appearing outside stores. Now, the company headquartered in Austin, Texas, is regaining lost ground, even as it has downplayed its core automotive business.
