The institutional adoption of XRP-based ETFs has taken a step forward with a recent filing from Charles Schwab revealing that shares of XRP-focused exchange-traded funds are being used as collateral assets. The filing, dated September 8, detailed nearly $4.8 million in positions connected to XRP ETFs.

Institutional Holdings and Collateral Usage
Charles Schwab’s Form N-MFP3 filing for the Schwab Prime Advantage Money Fund included explicit mention of XRP-related ETFs held as collateral. The documentation showed that Grayscale XRP Trust ETF shares held as collateral totaled approximately $1.01 million.
The same filing listed about $3.06 million in Canary XRP ETF shares and around $702,000 in Franklin XRP ETF shares. Combined, the three ETF positions reached roughly $4.8 million worth of collateralized holdings.
It is important to clarify that the presence of XRP ETF shares as collateral does not mean Schwab purchased these ETF shares for its money market fund. These positions may represent securities posted as collateral in lending arrangements or other financial operations.
Beyond Schwab’s disclosures, Clear Creek Financial Management reported holding 11,621 shares of the Bitwise XRP ETF as of June 30. Leisure Capital Management included 16,745 shares of Franklin XRP ETF in its second quarter portfolio.
While individual allocations to XRP ETFs remain modest compared to overall portfolio sizes, the increasing frequency of such holdings indicates that XRP-based investment products are gradually finding a place in the toolkit of institutional managers seeking exposure to regulated digital assets.
Expanding Institutional Access to XRP
The latest filing from Charles Schwab brings to light a broader trend: XRP ETF shares are not just being passively held, but also actively used as collateral in different institutional contexts. This suggests a diversification of utility for XRP-based funds beyond direct price speculation.
By utilizing ETFs as collateral, institutions are able to incorporate XRP exposure through regulated investment vehicles, shaping new ways to access the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Such activity could reflect a growing reliance on professional-grade tools to track, monitor, and deploy digital asset portfolios.
Increased transparency through public filings provides deeper insight into the evolving structure of institutional digital asset portfolios and how ETF products are being leveraged for a range of strategic objectives. Ongoing reporting could reveal whether usage of XRP ETFs as collateral or direct holdings will continue to expand.
Technical Analysis Points to Market Shift
While institutional interest appears to be rising, technical signals are drawing attention among analysts tracking the XRP price.
Crypto analyst ChartNerd is observing a bullish crossover in the two-week moving average convergence divergence (MACD) for XRP, a momentum indicator that has previously marked key market bottoms. The analyst notes that although the signal does not guarantee an immediate rally, it could indicate a shift in technical momentum in XRP’s favor in the coming period.
The combination of rising institutional engagement and technical developments keeps XRP under close watch.
