Trump Says Canada "Dying to Make A Deal" With The US

06:43 AM EDT, 09/10/2026 (MT Newswires) -- President Donald Trump said Canada is eager to strike a deal with the US, a day after he announced new Canadian product bans and tariffs, escalating the ongoing trade war between the two countries. Canada "very much wants to make a deal," Trump told attendees at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas late Wednesday in comments broadcast over the internet. "They are dying to make a deal." Canada and the US broke off trade talks last month after both sides accused each other of making unacceptable last-minute demands. On Aug. 22, US tariffs on specific Canadian goods worth around CA$28 billion took effect. Canada responded with matching "dollar-for-dollar" tariffs, which came into force on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Trump signed executive orders banning some Canadian products, such as malt-made beer and other alcoholic beverages, and imposing tariffs on new products. These come into effect on Sept. 29. Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc has said the latest US tariffs are "unjustified" and that "when the US is ready to engage, our government will work in good faith and constructively towards a more secure mutually beneficial trading relationship that fully respects Canadian sovereignty."
