Revisiting Former Stock Picks Vita Coco, Idacorp, Subaru -- Barrons.com

Looking at former stock picks is an honest stress test for investors to run. The market eventually scores every call, and those scores expose which theses were robust and which quietly failed when the facts changed. Periodically looking back at old recommendations sharpens judgment and reminds readers that conviction without accountability is just storytelling.
This week we cover:
Vita Coco, introduced by Todd Chanko in November.
Idacorp, covered by Al Root in May.
Subaru, written by Andrew Bary in July.
This note revisits recent stock picks where new developments suggest fresh buy or sell signals. Read last week's edition here.
Vita Coco
The beverage company best known for its coconut products now trades 38% below its 52-week high made June 18. The stock is up 23% since our recommendation.
On its weekly chart, it's still making higher lows since the fourth quarter of 2022. Looking at the stock's daily chart, one can see the bearish RSI divergence as the RSI made a lower high while the price made a higher high in May and June, exceeding the overbought 70 level. Note it is now heavily oversold, with a reading below 24. A failed breakout above a bull flag, accompanied by several doji candles, indicated exhaustion between June 17-24, which served as a warning.
The stock has now declined eight of the past 11 weeks, with all eight decliners closing at the low for the weekly range. A bullish falling wedge pattern has taken shape as it approaches the very round $50 number. It is now filling in a gap from the April 28 session, the day before a very powerful 30% earnings-related advance, and a break above a $61.49 cup base trigger.
This stock could reach $70 by early 2027, a 32% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $46. Vita Coco was trading around $52 Wednesday.
Idacorp
The utility company trades 11% below its 52-week high and has fallen eight of the last nine weeks. However, last week's spinning top candle right at the 50 week simple moving average suggests this could be a compelling buy here. The stock is up 22% since our recommendation.
On the daily ratio chart against the State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF, Idacorp has been a steady outperformer since November. The stock recently undercut its 200-day simple moving average but has stayed in close proximity to it. Idacorp also recorded several bullish candlesticks recently, starting with a counterattack on Aug. 31, a doji on Sept. 1, and a spinning top on Sept. 3.
Admire the potential triple bottom in this $135 area, with a bullish morning star completed on March 24, and a harami on June 2. This is also the area of a former cup-with-handle breakout from Feb. 2, above a $134.99 pivot.
One can enter here and add above a double bottom trigger of $143.98. I think this could reach $166 by early 2027, representing a 20% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $133. Idacorp was trading around $136 Wednesday.
Subaru
The Japanese auto maker is down 24% over the past year, but is trying to find a bottom here after gaining 5% over the last month. The stock is 6% higher since our recommendation. It pays a dividend yield of 4.4% and has repeatedly found support in the $7-$8 range over the past five years.
Looking at the monthly chart, Subaru has lagged behind regional peer Toyota, over the last decade. Round number theory has come into play with back to back doji candles in December 2016-January 2017. It didn't find a low until it hit $7 in April 2022. I feel the stock has bottomed once again in the familiar $7-$8 area.
Evidence supports that view, including a bullish hammer in April 2020, two more in the first half of 2022, and dojis in early 2023, early 2025, and August. Bears have had ample time to push this name lower over the past few years, yet even the bearish death cross in the second half of 2024 was unable to do so.
I believe the right side of a long cup base is forming, with the stock potentially traveling toward $13 by mid 2027, representing a 59% gain from current prices. Remain bullish above $7.30. Subaru was trading around $8.20 Wednesday.
