Canada Reviewing Latest US Tariffs, Product Bans as Trade Dispute Escalates
06:38 AM EDT, 09/09/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canada is assessing the latest "unjustified" US tariffs and product bans, said Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc late Tuesday, as President Donald Trump escalates the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries. Minister LeBlanc said in an X post late Tuesday that he is in contact with the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump signed executive orders banning some Canadian products, such as malt-made beer and certain wines and other alcoholic beverages, and imposing tariffs on new products. Trump justified Tuesday's measures, claiming Canada was "discriminating" against the United States. The new measures come into effect on Sept. 29. On Tuesday, Canada's counter-tariffs against other US tariffs introduced in August took effect. The Canadian tariffs were imposed on a "dollar-for-dollar" basis in response to US tariffs on about CA$28 billion worth of Canadian goods. Minister LeBlanc said Canada is prepared to resume talks with the US when its largest trading partner is ready to engage in constructive negotiations. Discussions broke down on Aug. 21 after both sides accused each other of making unacceptable last-minute demands. "When the US is ready to engage, our government will work in good faith and constructively towards a more secure mutually beneficial trading relationship that fully respects Canadian sovereignty," LeBlanc said in his X post. Also on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said reducing Canada's reliance on the US will come at a "cost" but is necessary to strengthen the economy and diversify its trade relationships.
