- Malaysian officials stated on Tuesday that due to rising temperatures, electricity consumption by the country’s data centers continues to increase, and the government needs to fill an approximately 9 GW gap in gas-fired power generation capacity by 2032.
- The CEO of the Energy Commission revealed that the proportion of electricity used by data centers reached a historic peak of 9.3% in the second week of August, far exceeding this year’s average of around 7%. The increase in temperature has significantly escalated energy consumption for cooling systems.
- Officials expect that by 2035, data centers could account for 31% of Peninsular Malaysia’s power demand. As the country gradually phases out coal-fired power, the pressure to replace it with gas-fired generation will increase significantly, with a complete coal exit scheduled for 2044.
- Malaysia is leveraging its domestic natural gas reserves to attract tens of billions of US dollars in tech investment, but there are no new gas power plants scheduled to come online this year or next. Authorities plan to cope with demand growth through the end of 2027 by optimizing existing units.
- High temperatures not only raise electricity use but also cause dam water levels to drop, affecting hydropower output. However, industry consultants believe that the current surge in demand remains within grid planning expectations and has not caused supply shortages. Going forward, attention needs to be paid to climate trends and the progress of gas-fired plant construction.
