- According to shipping tracking data, several Qatar-linked empty liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers are returning to the Persian Gulf, which the market interprets as a sign that Qatar may be preparing to resume LNG exports through the Strait of Hormuz. At present, at least seven Qatar-related LNG vessels are heading to this area, with one having already passed through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf. Previously, Qatar had almost completely suspended all LNG exports.
- Since a Qatar LNG vessel was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz in July, Qatar suspended nearly all liquefied natural gas exports, while crude oil shipments have seen a significant rebound. This signal of ships returning indicates that, despite the recent escalation of US-Iran tensions and Iran delineating restricted zones outside the strait, Qatar may be considering a more proactive approach to resuming shipping.
- The global natural gas market will closely watch Qatar's next moves. If Qatar officially resumes LNG loading and exports, it would mean the world's largest LNG supplier has reassessed the risks of the Strait of Hormuz, which may alleviate concerns about tightening supplies in the European and Asian markets in the short term.
