Digital assets moved further into the G20’s economic policy agenda this week after finance ministers and central bank governors formally recognized their ability to support economic growth.

In the latest Chair’s Statement issued by the G20, officials committed to building “clear pathways” for responsible digital asset innovation while maintaining financial stability, marking a shift in how crypto fits within discussions about global financial infrastructure.

The statement followed the second meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina, held from August 31 to September 1 under the United States’ 2026 G20 Presidency.

The G20 placed digital assets within a broader section covering financial sector innovation and regulatory modernization. Officials recognized the private sector’s role in developing digital financial technologies while pointing out safeguards for monetary systems and financial stability.

For crypto markets, the regulatory language is particularly important. G20 members committed to advancing regulatory and supervisory frameworks that support economic growth while establishing clear pathways for “sound digital financial and digital assets innovation.”

However, the statement does not provide specific regulations or approve particular cryptocurrencies. Instead, it links continued digital asset development with oversight, responsible innovation and financial-stability requirements.

The G20 also linked financial innovation to changes in cross-border payment infrastructure. Members reaffirmed the G20 Roadmap for Enhancing Cross-border Payments and called for longer operating hours for large-value payment systems.

They also encouraged broader use of the harmonized ISO 20022 data model. In addition, officials called for easier cross-border transmission of financial services data while accounting for domestic laws and data-security requirements.

Stablecoins will remain part of those discussions. The G20 said it expects the forthcoming Financial Stability Board findings to cover the cross-border implications of global stablecoin arrangements. The FSB will also examine stablecoin data sources, availability and potential challenges.

Meanwhile, the G20 maintained its focus on financial crime controls. Members urged jurisdictions with significant virtual asset activity to prioritize implementing Financial Action Task Force standards.
