Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Mixed in Afternoon Trading

02:00 PM EDT, 09/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were mixed Tuesday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) increasing 0.6% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) falling 1.6%. Redbook US same-store sales rose by 9.6% from a year earlier in the week ended Aug. 29 after a 9.1% year-over-year increase in the previous week. Redbook noted that most companies reported strong back-to-school demand for children's and juniors' apparel and footwear. In corporate news, Ford (F) is recalling 148,663 US vehicles over potential loss of drive power and failures affecting headlights or the windshield washer system, Reuters reported, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Shares fell 1.2%. Stellantis (STLA) will suspend production at its Mirafiori factory in Turin, Italy, between Sept. 2 and Sept. 4, several media outlets reported Tuesday, citing statements from the company and the FIOM trade union. Shares declined 3%. WPP (WPP) plans to eliminate as many as 1,000 additional jobs by the end of 2026 as part of a restructuring to cut costs, the Financial Times reported. WPP shares were down 2.9%. Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) said it agreed to sell its equity stake in Chobani back to the firm for $800 million, and its manufacturing and warehouse facilities in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for about $125 million. Shares were up 0.2%.
