European Central Bank Governing Council member Simkus: One rate hike in September may not be enough

Gediminas Simkus, a member of the European Central Bank's Governing Council, stated that even if the European Central Bank raises interest rates next week, it will not be enough to bring inflation back to target levels. The Lithuanian central bank official said in an interview published by Econostream Media on Tuesday, "All available data at this moment leads me to believe that it is very likely that we will raise interest rates, and I'm afraid the rate hike in September may still not be enough."
Simkus pointed out that the rise in natural gas futures prices, the increase in agricultural product prices, and Europe's economic performance exceeding expectations all suggest that consumer price prospects are continuing to move upwards.
Simkus said, "This should prompt changes in inflation forecasts, which would require the interest rate path to move slightly higher to ensure medium-term inflation remains at 2%." He added, "Overall, the inflation environment has intensified, so the reasons supporting interest rate hikes are quite clear."
