The European Central Bank stated in a blog post that U.S. tech giants are taking on large amounts of debt to raise capital for AI investments, which may mark the beginning of an unprecedented wave of financing and could reshape bond markets, including those in the euro area. The future financing needs of ultra-large-scale cloud service providers are enormous, with strong profit expectations but also uncertainties — requiring close monitoring.
The article points out that potential international spillover effects, rapidly rising leverage ratios (especially as companies turn to less transparent debt markets for financing), and broader impacts on the operation of euro area financial markets all require significant attention. Nearly 10% of the outstanding bonds issued by U.S. ultra-large-scale cloud service providers are denominated in euros, totaling approximately 40 billion euros.
However, so far, the spillover impact of AI-related borrowing on euro financing for other corporate issuers has been limited, and the influence on investors’ portfolios is not significant.
