Autodesk released its financial report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, after the U.S. stock market closed on Thursday, Autodesk (ADSK.US) released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. For the three months ended July 31, the company recorded revenue of $2.05 billion, a 16% year-on-year increase, exceeding analysts’ expectations of $2.01 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $3.30, also far surpassing the market’s expectation of $3.12. GAAP operating margin rose about 4 percentage points year-over-year to 29%, while non-GAAP operating margin climbed to 41%. Free cash flow surged by 24% to $561 million.

Q2 Report Card: Dual Engines of Architecture and Manufacturing Drive Outperformance

In the second quarter ended July 31, all of Autodesk’s core indicators exceeded market expectations:

Revenue and EPS both exceeded the upper end of guidance. The AECO product family (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations) generated revenue of $1.03 billion, up 17% year-over-year; AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT revenue was $500 million, up 14%; Manufacturing (MFG) revenue reached $385 million, up 15%. The architecture business maintained growth above 20%, and Fusion products continued to show strong growth. GAAP operating margin rose to 29%, expanding approximately 400 basis points year-over-year; non-GAAP operating margin increased to 41%, up 200 basis points year-over-year.

Guidance Falls Short of Expectations

Despite the standout Q2 results, the stock price plunged more than 5% after hours. The "punishment" from the market focused on two aspects:

First, Q3 profit guidance fell short of expectations. Autodesk expects Q3 revenue between $2.125 billion and $2.140 billion, with adjusted EPS only between $3.04 and $3.09. The EPS midpoint of $3.065 is well below the previous market expectation of $3.14. While revenue guidance is above expectations, profit guidance is lower—a typical "cost erosion of profit" signal.

Second, profit margin dilution from the MaintainX acquisition. The company completed the $3.6 billion all-cash acquisition of maintenance software company MaintainX on August 3. Autodesk CFO Janesh Moorjani explicitly stated that the full-year non-GAAP profit margin guidance remains unchanged, reflecting higher potential profitability from operating leverage being offset by the margin dilution caused by the MaintainX acquisition. Investors are concerned that the short-term integration costs of this acquisition will continue to put pressure on profits.

There are also concerns in the full-year guidance. The company raised its full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance from $8.16–8.22 billion to $8.295–8.345 billion; billings guidance was raised from $8.51–8.58 billion to $8.575–8.65 billion. However, the midpoint of the full-year adjusted EPS guidance ($12.56) is lower than analysts’ expectation of $12.60—a small difference, but significant enough for the market to magnify negative signals amid the current "AI disruption anxiety."

“AI Anxiety” for Software Stocks: General AI Tools Disrupt Traditional Moats

Autodesk’s after-hours stock drop is not an isolated case. Since the beginning of this year, the software sector has come under broad pressure due to investor concerns that AI tools could disrupt traditional software business models. Peers like ServiceNow and Adobe have also experienced sharp volatility.

The threat from AI is structural. Ever-more powerful general AI tools are believed to have the potential to disrupt or replace certain specialized software functions, threatening the pricing power and customer stickiness of traditional SaaS firms. The market is worried that if AI can automatically complete professional tasks such as architectural design and engineering drafting, Autodesk's core value will be eroded.

However, Autodesk CEO Andrew Anagnost offered a different narrative: “The future of AI in architecture will belong to trustworthy platforms—platforms that are able to combine the richest background information with the right models. Autodesk’s unique advantage is that we integrate design, manufacturing, and operations through continuous data, context, and experience flows.”

The core logic of this assessment is: the AI model itself is merely a tool, while Autodesk’s decades of accumulated industry data and cross-lifecycle project intelligence are the true moat. In the AI era, the platform with data context will have more lasting value than a company with just the strongest single model.

Goldman Sachs also pointed out when launching coverage of Autodesk on August 11 that MaintainX and AI further expand the company's long-term opportunity set, and AI has the potential to strengthen Autodesk’s platform and deepen its role within customer workflows. However, Goldman Sachs also warned that uncertainty remains regarding the AI transformation in the software industry.

The Cost of the $3.6 Billion Acquisition: MaintainX Becomes a Drag on Profits

The market’s core concerns center on Autodesk’s just-completed $3.6 billion cash acquisition—operations management software company MaintainX. The deal was officially closed on August 3, and MaintainX’s annual recurring revenue is expected to exceed $135 million, marking Autodesk’s strategic extension from traditional design software to the full chain of asset lifecycle. The company formally established the new “Autodesk Operations Solutions” business unit, expanding its business map from “design” and “manufacturing” to the “operations” phase.

CFO Moorjani stated on the earnings call that the company has raised its full-year billings and revenue growth guidance to reflect higher potential growth expectations and the incremental contribution from MaintainX.

However, the integration costs from the acquisition are eroding profit margins. Autodesk CFO Janesh Moorjani admitted in the earnings statement that the company has narrowed its fiscal 2027 free cash flow expectations, “reflecting that the stronger potential growth expectation is offset by the operating and net financing costs of MaintainX,” including approximately $45 million in transaction-related fees.

The investor concern is this: While the acquisition opens the door to a closed-loop asset lifecycle AI strategy extending from “design and manufacturing” to “operations management” for Autodesk, the digestion of short-term integration costs may continue to suppress profit performance. As Moorjani noted, the unchanged full-year non-GAAP profit margin outlook reflects the incremental benefit of operating leverage and market optimization being offset by MaintainX’s margin dilution.
