Canada's Payroll Employment Is Broadly Flat in June, While Weekly Earnings Tad Higher Annually

09:05 AM EDT, 08/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian payroll employment, measured in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours (SEPH), was broadly unchanged in June, edging up by 4,800, or 0.0% on the month, after a 45,000, or 0.2% monthly increase in May, according to the country's statistical agency on Thursday. On a year-over-year basis, SEPH employment was up 155,000, or 0.8%, wrote Statistics Canada in a statement. June employment gains were led by public administration (+10,600), construction (+2,000) and management of companies and enterprises (+900), partly offset by declines in manufacturing (-7,200), accommodation and food services (-6,100), retail trade (-3,900) and professional, scientific and technical services (-1,600), added StatsCan. Average weekly earnings rose 3.4% annually to C$1,344 in June, up slightly from 3.3% growth in May, said the Ottawa-based agency.
