(1) Canada's current account switched from a deficit in the previous quarter to a surplus of approximately CAD 8.8 billion in the second quarter, far exceeding market expectations of a CAD 2 billion deficit. This marks the first surplus since the second quarter of 2022 and is the largest surplus since the fourth quarter of 2005. (2) The core driver behind the significant swing in the current account was goods trade, with energy products leading strong export growth and pushing the goods trade balance from a deficit to a sizeable surplus of around CAD 12.2 billion. Although imports also grew, their growth rate lagged significantly behind exports. (3) The surplus in services trade shrank dramatically to nearly zero, while the primary income deficit widened to around CAD 2.6 billion due to increased interest payments on debt securities. The secondary income deficit also expanded notably, affected by the rise in private transfers and reduction in government transfers. (4) The scale of this surplus surpassed market expectations, reflecting a substantial improvement in Canada's trade conditions as a net energy exporter under the backdrop of high global energy prices. Oil and gas export revenues offset weaknesses in other external balance items. (5) The Canadian dollar is supported by stronger fundamentals as the trade surplus expands, providing short-term upward momentum. However, the market must also evaluate the potential impact of subsequent energy price fluctuations and global demand slowdown on the sustainability of exports. Rising debt servicing costs in a high interest rate environment remain a structural concern.
