Permian Basin Could Become Top US Gas Producer by 2030

07:02 PM EDT, 08/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The Permian Basin could become the largest U.S. natural gas-producing region by the end of the decade, potentially overtaking the Marcellus as soon as 2030, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing Citi analysts. The shift would make the Permian the leading U.S. gas basin, with production largely driven by oil economics, Bloomberg reported. Permian gas prices were negative for four months this year as rising oil output boosted gas supplies and pipelines reached capacity, the report said. Additional Permian supply could reduce the need for gas-focused basins to ramp production as LNG exports and data centers drive demand, Citi said, according to Bloomberg.
