(1) The UK energy regulator Ofgem has announced that, starting from October 1st, the energy price cap will be raised by 4% to £1,723 (approximately $2,349), marking the highest level since January 2024. The main reason for the increase is the conflict in the Middle East, which has pushed up wholesale prices for natural gas and electricity. (2) This price hike comes as the winter energy consumption peak approaches, further increasing the burden on households. Analysis by the UK Energy Association shows that, so far this year, household energy arrears have reached £6 billion and are expected to rise to £7 billion by the end of December. (3) UK Energy Secretary Farnborough acknowledged that families in difficult circumstances "need more support" and stated that additional assistance measures are currently being considered.
