  • The Bank of Korea will hold its interest rate decision meeting on Thursday. In July, it had already raised rates by 25 basis points to 2.75%. If another rate hike is implemented this month, it will indicate the central bank is taking a pre-emptive strategy to curb inflation and maintain financial stability. It will also mean South Korea is tightening policy ahead of the Federal Reserve.
  • According to analysts from NH Investment & Securities, the August decision will set the tone for this rate hike cycle—whether it will be proactive or act with caution. An iM Securities analyst pointed out that the cost of delaying a hike is rising, and there is almost no benefit in waiting until October to act.
  • On the other hand, those predicting no rate change believe the central bank can take more time to assess the impact of last month’s hike, and note that July’s inflation slowdown, the appreciation of the won, and the recent stock market correction all support a wait-and-see approach. An analyst from Eugene Investment & Securities noted that as long as the central bank maintains communication about “the possibility of future rate hikes”, this in itself can have a tightening effect without bearing unnecessary risks.
