Rubber prices close higher, supported by production area weather and declining inventories

(1) The Malaysian rubber market closed higher on Monday, mainly driven by the rally in regional rubber futures. Japanese rubber futures fluctuated within a narrow range amid signals of supply tightening and weakening crude oil prices, providing support to market sentiment. (2) Heavy rains in Thailand’s main producing regions have sparked supply concerns, disrupting tapping operations in the northern and northeastern areas and reducing raw material output. Meteorological forecasts warn of persistent heavy rain and flash flood risks from August 27 to 29, further boosting buying interest in the market. (3) Rubber stocks at the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell by about 3% from the previous week, with steady demand from China’s tire and synthetic rubber industries, combined with the US services PMI hitting a nearly two-year high, all contributing to strong demand-side support. (4) However, gains were limited by falling crude oil prices, a strengthening ringgit against the US dollar, and geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia. As of 3 p.m., the Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 was quoted at 957 sen per kilogram, up 10 sen; bulk latex was quoted at 681.5 sen per kilogram, up 2 sen. (5) The Kuala Lumpur rubber market will be closed tomorrow for Muhammad’s birthday holiday and will resume trading the day after.
