Japan's nationwide next-day electricity price increased by 20% on Monday compared to last week, reaching 25.18 yen per kilowatt-hour, marking the highest level since January 2023.
High temperatures drive power demand: The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a nationwide abnormal heat warning. In Tokyo and the Kansai region, the highest temperature is expected to reach 35°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Nagasaki may climb to 37°C on Wednesday, boosting demand for air conditioning electricity consumption.
Fuel costs provide support: Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices remain higher than the level before the US-Israeli strike on Iran at the end of February, directly increasing the power generation cost of Japan's largest electricity source. Coupled with high temperatures, this forms a double pressure.
