The South African rand rose to its highest level since the outbreak of the February 28 conflict on Friday, trading at around 15.99 against the US dollar, up approximately 0.8% from the previous day's close. Gold, one of South Africa's main exports, climbed to its highest point in over three months and is set to record a weekly gain for the third consecutive week, providing strong support for the rand.
The weakening of the US dollar, along with the US Treasury's announcement to increase the scale of long-term bond buybacks, have jointly boosted gold prices. The Treasury Secretary indicated that the buyback scale could be further expanded. The US Dollar Index is expected to finish lower this week, making gold priced in USD more attractive to overseas buyers.
Like other emerging market currencies, the South African rand continues to be affected by shifts in global market sentiment. Especially since the outbreak of geopolitical conflicts, the exchange rate has been closely linked to risk appetite and commodity prices.
