Samsung Accelerates Expansion in the US: Texas No. 2 Wafer Plant to Start Construction by Year-End, Equipment Certification Already Initiated
Samsung's North American expansion is advancing rapidly. Although the specifications for the second phase in Texas have not yet been finalized, Samsung is already requiring suppliers to accelerate equipment certification. After securing a major Tesla order and putting the first-phase 2nm production line into operation by the end of this year, the second phase aims for mass production by 2030. Whether Samsung can secure another "super client" in advance will be the key to the timely surge in its production capacity.
Samsung Electronics is accelerating the preliminary preparations for the second phase of its wafer fabrication plant project in Taylor, Texas, USA. Even before finalizing the plant specifications, Samsung has already sent certification requests to multiple equipment suppliers, indicating a strong desire to expand its advanced manufacturing capacity in the US.
According to Korea's technology media outlet ZDNet Korea, Samsung Electronics has recently requested major semiconductor equipment partners to obtain SEMI certification in advance for the installation of equipment at the second phase of the Taylor fab. SEMI certification is an industry standard for assessing the safety of semiconductor equipment and is a necessary qualification before exporting equipment. An executive in the semiconductor equipment industry stated, "Although the precise specifications for the second phase of the Taylor fab have not yet been determined, the response speed of Samsung Electronics' wafer foundry division has exceeded expectations," adding that more detailed plans are expected to become clear by the end of the year.
During the Q2 earnings conference call held on June 30, Samsung Electronics officially announced plans to begin construction of the second phase at the Taylor site by the end of this year, targeting mass production by 2030 to "timely respond to the growing customer demand."
Phase I accelerates, 2nm process secured for Tesla
The Taylor wafer fabrication plant is a core facility dedicated to mass production of the most advanced process technology at Samsung Electronics. The first phase is currently in the equipment installation stage, aiming to commence operations by the end of this year, with 2-nanometer process technology as its main focus—the most advanced in the industry.
Tesla is widely recognized as the core customer for the first phase of the Taylor wafer plant. Samsung Electronics and Tesla signed a semiconductor foundry contract worth 22.76 trillion Korean won in the third quarter of last year, which soon accelerated the construction progress of the Taylor Phase I project. Previously, the project had been delayed multiple times due to difficulties in acquiring customers and deteriorating market conditions.
Securing major clients will determine the pace of Phase II mass production
Although preliminary preparations have begun, whether the second phase of the Taylor fab can progress as scheduled still depends on securing large clients. Industry insiders point out that either a further increase in Tesla's order volume or attracting new major clients will directly affect the overall roadmap from cleanroom construction to mass production line implementation for the second phase of the project.
It is reported that Samsung E&A, a construction subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is currently working on deploying dozens of personnel to the Taylor project site to support the construction of the second phase of the plant. However, the above-mentioned industry source emphasized, "For Samsung Electronics to swiftly advance mass production lines after the cleanroom is completed, it is essential to secure large customers in advance."
Supply chain preparations in advance, firm investment commitment
The fact that Samsung Electronics has required suppliers to complete SEMI certification ahead of finalizing the specifications for the second phase of the plant is seen in the industry as a clear signal of its investment determination for this project. Since SEMI certification is a prerequisite for equipment export, accelerating this process means Samsung Electronics is reserving a window for quick equipment installation down the line.
The industry insider stated, "This shows that Samsung Electronics is actively preparing to invest, and the outlines of the specific plan will gradually become clear by the end of this year." For investors focused on Samsung Electronics' wafer foundry business, the dynamics surrounding major client acquisition will be the core indicator to determine whether the second phase of the project can proceed as scheduled.
