Long-term bond yields rise, international gold price falls below $4,400 per ounce

  1. Due to the sustained upward pressure on global long-term treasury yields, the spot gold price has fallen below the $4,400/ounce mark, with market traders continuously assessing the trajectory of U.S. inflation and subsequent interest rate changes. On Tuesday, the intraday drop for spot gold reached as much as 0.7%.
  2. After hitting a three-month low on Monday, the U.S. Dollar Index remained range-bound, with no clear one-sided trend emerging. Multiple U.S. economic indicators have been relatively weak, and the interest rate swap market is no longer fully pricing in another Federal Reserve rate hike within this year—a shift from the expectations seen just a week ago.
  3. Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, stated in a research note that a weaker U.S. dollar combined with subdued rate hike expectations may help resolve the two main negative factors that previously triggered a pullback in gold prices.
