As cash-strapped UK consumers seek discounted goods to reduce living expenses, food price inflation in the UK has fallen to its lowest level in nearly two years.

According to Jinse Finance APP, with cash-strapped British consumers seeking discount goods to reduce living expenses, the rise in UK food prices has slowed to its lowest level in nearly two years. Data released by market research agency Worldpanel by Numerator on Tuesday shows that, in the four weeks ending August 9, the year-on-year increase in UK comparable grocery prices fell to 2.1%, the lowest since October 2024 and the fifth consecutive month of slowdown. Previously, the figure was 2.6% for the four weeks ending July 12, and 3.0% in the period before that, revealing a clear trend of inflation decline.

The ongoing cooling of food inflation in this cycle is mainly driven by consumers shifting en masse to promotional items. Data shows that the proportion of sales including discounts reached 31.3% during this period, hitting a new high for the year.

Meanwhile, fierce competition between supermarkets, consumer resistance to further price hikes, and more effective hedging strategies from suppliers have collectively suppressed the rate of food price increases.

Since taking office, new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has placed easing cost-of-living pressures at the core of his governance agenda and has already introduced several small measures, including capping bus fares and reducing the VAT rate on household energy bills.

Worldpanel business director Sally Ball stated: “Inflation has eased again—this marks the fifth consecutive month of cooling prices. Now, 39% of consumers feel financially comfortable, which is the highest level of financial confidence since November 2021. However, not everyone feels this way—20% of respondents said they are still struggling, which has a pronounced effect on their spending decisions. Among these households, 30% are more inclined to prioritize essential daily groceries over additional summer expenses such as holidays or travel.”

By category, butter, spreads, juice, and cider have seen the fastest price declines, while fresh fish, skincare products, and shampoo have experienced the highest price increases.

Worldpanel data also shows that heatwave conditions are significantly affecting consumer behavior: ice cream sales have surged, and during the latest four-week period, consumers made 6.2 million more trips to the frozen food section.

The report also reveals that more and more families are postponing dinner until after 8 p.m. to avoid eating during the hottest hours. Ball noted: “The ongoing hot weather in the UK has indeed influenced people’s eating patterns. Earlier this month we observed dinner times being delayed, and now 13% of dinners are eaten after 8 p.m.”

On the macroeconomic front, boosted by sunny weather and the World Cup football tournament, the UK’s retail, accommodation, and leisure industries performed strongly, with the economy unexpectedly achieving month-on-month expansion in June.

It is noteworthy that, against the backdrop of continued inflation easing, the UK supermarket industry landscape is undergoing reshaping.

Discount supermarket Lidl has achieved the most significant market share growth among all physical grocery retailers, continuing to lead the growth of brick-and-mortar grocers. In the 12 weeks ending August 9, Lidl’s sales rose 8.5% year-on-year, with market share climbing to 8.8%, up 0.5 percentage points from the same period last year. The German discount retailer has officially surpassed Morrisons to become the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket. Since entering the UK market in 1994, Lidl now covers more than three-fifths of British households.
