Two years after going public, social-media platform Reddit is joining the S&P 500. It will replace AvalonBay Communities, a real-estate investment trust that is being bought by fellow S&P 500 member Equity Residential, creating a vacancy in the index.

Reddit will take AvalonBay's spot before trading opens on Aug. 18, S&P Dow Jones Indices said after Thursday's close. Reddit shares popped ahead of the bell Friday in anticipation of buying by passive funds that track the S&P 500.

As of Thursday, the stock had fallen almost a third this year driven by concerns AI models will divert traffic from Reddit's message boards.

S&P Dow Jones Indices, a division of S&P Global, has a committee that meets monthly to review the makeup of various indexes. As of July, companies needed a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion to be eligible for the S&P 500. Reddit cleared that bar with a market cap of over $30 billion on Thursday.
