7,975% Profit on Move: Post-Satoshi Era Whale Shifts Dormant Bitcoin (BTC) to New Wallet Standard

UTodayUToday2026/08/11 06:30

The start of a new week has set capital created in the post-Satoshi Nakamoto era in motion across the cryptocurrency market. An investor who had not touched their assets for more than 12 years moved their entire holdings to a new wallet, recording an unprecedented paper return.

The economics of the transfer:

  • January 2014: The coins were purchased at approximately $803 per BTC.
  • August 2026: The same 26.96 BTC were worth $1.76 million when they were moved.
  • Net result: At the time of the transfer, the investor's unrealized profit stood at $1.73 million. The investment had gained a record 7,975%.

Despite the enormous amount of capital involved, the transfer cost the owner just 0.00000176 BTC. The network fee for processing the transaction amounted to a negligible $0.11.

Why the whale swapped wallet standards mid-crisis

The dormant wallet's sudden migration coincided with the largest security crisis of the summer. The investor's activity may be linked to the recent Coldcard hardware wallet breach, in which hackers exploited a vulnerability to drain thousands of addresses of more than $116 million.

Market-wide panic has forced long-standing Bitcoin holders to urgently evacuate their assets, including by moving into spot exchange-traded funds, which recorded $80 million in inflows over the past four sessions.

The address formats indicate that the whale woke up to migrate to a new storage standard rather than to sell the coins. The investor transferred the funds from an old Legacy address, which begins with "1" and was used during the industry's early years, to the more modern Nested SegWit wallet format, which begins with "3."

This standard compresses data and can reduce fees on future transfers by 20% to 40%.

The entire amount was sent to the new address "3B5sQNx7xoXpZGhU2DizZSXH6HWtjrh1wp", where it remains unmoved. The market continues to closely monitor this wallet and similar "awakenings," as any potential transfer of these funds to trading platforms could have a localized impact on Bitcoin's current price.

Nvidia and OpenAI are close to signing a data center financing agreement in Ohio. However, Nvidia's financial guarantee has been reduced from $250 billion to less than $120 billion, covering only about 5 GW of computing power for the project's first phase. This adjustment is a direct response to investor concerns about Nvidia's risk exposure—after the previous $250 billion guarantee plan was revealed, Nvidia's stock price fell 5% in a single day. The agreement could be signed as early as this weekend.

Ivy League’s space gamble: Harvard reveals $2.2 billions SpaceX position, its largest single stock holding

Harvard University Investment Management Company disclosed that it holds $2.2 billion worth of SpaceX shares, making it the largest single stock position in its $4.3 billion US equity portfolio. This holding originated from Harvard’s early investment in SpaceX through venture capital funds, and the position has significantly appreciated after SpaceX’s public listing in June this year. The University of California also disclosed a roughly $1 billion position in SpaceX during the same period. Over the past decade, endowment funds from several universities have made substantial bets on private tech assets.
