Microsoft's market value surged by $490 billions in one day, possibly setting a global stock market record for the largest single-day increase in market capitalization.
Microsoft surged as much as 17% intraday on Thursday, adding approximately 490 billion dollars to its market capitalization. If these gains are maintained until the close, Microsoft will surpass Nvidia’s previous record of a 440 billion dollar single-day market cap increase.
Microsoft is poised to set the largest single-day market cap increase record in the history of the global stock market.
On Thursday, Microsoft soared by 17% at one point. As of 12:55 p.m. New York time, its market cap had increased by about $490 billion. If this gain holds until market close, Microsoft will surpass Nvidia's previous record for single-day market cap growth.
Nvidia’s record was set after U.S. President Trump announced a 90-day suspension of tariff measures last year, with a single-day market cap increase of about $440 billion. If Microsoft maintains today’s surge to the close, it will become the largest single-day market cap growth in history.
Thursday's surge in Microsoft’s share price was its largest intraday jump since October 2008. Previously, the company’s earnings report showed that its cloud computing business Azure achieved a year-on-year revenue growth of 43% in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, marking the highest growth rate since early 2022. Meanwhile, its capital expenditure plans were lower than expected.

Microsoft’s nearly $500 billion increase in market cap already exceeds the total market capitalization of about 96% of the components in the S&P 500 index. In other words, Microsoft’s single-day growth in market value surpasses the overall value of the vast majority of listed U.S. companies.
This increment even surpasses the combined total of the 44 smallest companies in the S&P 500, including Domino’s Pizza, Clorox, and Hasbro.
The scale of Microsoft’s single-day increase in market capitalization also exceeds the entire size of several global stock markets. The total market capitalization of countries such as South Africa, Turkey, Finland, and Vietnam is lower than what Microsoft is expected to add in one day on Thursday.
