Here are some themes investors will be looking at when Apple reports earnings this afternoon:

Will memory costs take a bite out of profits? Analysts are projecting Apple's product gross margins will come in at 36.6%, about two percentage points higher than the year-ago period.

Other things on ivnestors' minds include:

-- How does the company plan to offset chip and memory costs to avoid passing higher iPhone costs to consumers? Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal last month that price hikes were "unavoidable" for most products but didn't provide details on how iPhones might be affected. The Wall Street Journal crunched the numbers for an early estimate.

-- Cook's successor, John Ternus, is now about one month away from taking the helm. Investors are looking for clues on how the company's direction could change under the new CEO come September.

-- Can the stock keep up recent momentum? Apple shares have held up better than other Magnificent Seven tech stocks of late, rising 24% so far this year, the best of the group. Apple this week also overtook Nvidia to reclaim its position as the largest U.S. company by market value.
