Investors will get another dispatch from the front lines of the artificial-intelligence buildout when Amazon reports its quarterly earnings in the afternoon.

Here's what to know:

-- Analysts are projecting capital expenditures of $200 billion for the calendar year so investors will be listening for any updates on that number. Another big question is whether free cash flow will be negative, as it was last quarter.

-- "If they increase (capex) significantly people will worry, if they go further negative cash flow they will worry," said Gil Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson.

-- Analysts are expecting revenue to come in at $197.03 billion for the quarter ended June 30, up 17.5% from the year-ago quarter.
