EURCNH: Short Strategy Cost-Effectiveness Becomes Prominent
In the context where the medium- to long-term direction of the US dollar remains unclear, the market is in urgent need of a more certain trading theme. Based on comprehensive multi-dimensional pricing logic, EUR/CNH is currently in a sustained downward cycle, making short positions highly attractive with sufficient safety margins and return potential.
I. Technical Analysis: Bearish Pattern Confirmed, Downtrend Continues
As of July 24, for nearly 20 trading days, EUR/CNH has been oscillating weakly between the 7.6829-7.7857 range, with each rebound halted by the 20-day moving average, and bulls consistently unable to break the short-term resistance. The current price is close to the 7.6829 stage low, with sustained downward pressure from bears. The 7.68 level below is a short-term core support; once it is effectively breached, further downside space will open up. On the upside, the 20-day moving average and the 7.78 whole number level form dual resistance.
The exchange rate has also fallen below the 200-week and 200-month long-term moving averages, cementing a mid- to long-term weak pattern, with technical and macro fundamentals forming a dual resonance, so the downward trend remains in force.
II. Fundamentals: Continued Divergence in China-Europe Economic and Trade Structures
From an overseas macro pricing perspective, the core reason for the weakness in EUR/CNH stems from the long-term misalignment in trade, industry, and economic cycles between China and Europe. In June 2026, China's monthly trade surplus with the EU reached a record high, with the cumulative surplus for the first half of the year rising sharply. In contrast, the eurozone's trade deficit with China has expanded steadily over the past year, as Europe's chemical and automotive industries, its main pillars, have scaled back output under high energy costs, while China's solar, new energy vehicles, and high-end equipment sectors have become increasingly competitive, steadily increasing export market share and widening the bilateral industrial gap.

Expectations of trade tensions are further capping euro's upside, with German officials openly highlighting an imbalance in the bilateral exchange rate, and the EU planning to implement a new round of trade restriction tools in October. The market expects "moderate RMB appreciation to ease trade frictions" as a policy move, directly limiting the rebound height for EUR/CNH.
In short, RMB pricing is now centered on a massive surplus with Europe, while the eurozone lacks a current account surplus as a cushion. This fundamental divergence forms a long-term drag, making EUR/CNH prone to decline and difficult to rally.
III. Strategy: High Beta and Low Volatility Increase the Attractiveness of Short Positions
The euro's high beta relative to the dollar amplifies the pressure on exchange rates to fall. According to Bank of America, the euro's beta to the dollar index has reached 1.18 (with an R² of 87%) over the past two years, while the RMB's beta is only 0.34 (R² of 47%), meaning that during periods of dollar strength, the euro depreciates much more than the RMB, placing ECB/CNH under natural pressure. At the same time, shorting EUR/CNH allows one to avoid the tail risk of directly going long the US dollar, making it a more conservative hedge for emerging markets.

There are two main practical approaches: first, directly holding a spot short EUR/CNH position; second, selling euro against RMB call options to continuously collect premiums and enhance returns. Although the current implied volatility for EURCNH has dropped to a historical low, it remains higher than realized volatility most of the time. Therefore, provided low volatility persists, selling calls remains a good carry trade strategy.
