Apple shares rose in morning trading, giving the tech giant a market capitalization of $5 trillion, at least for a short time.

The stock breached the $340.43 price target to give it the rare $5-trillion valuation today. Nvidia is the only other company to hit that threshold, though a recent stumble means it now lags Apple.

The reshuffling of Silicon Valley's hierarchy comes as the market continues to reevaluate companies vying for artificial-intelligence domination.

Nvidia was the darling of Wall Street for much of the past year as chip scarcity drove an unprecedented premium on hardware and tech giants scrambled for its products. But its stock has proved volatile amid doubts that the AI buildout can continue at last year's pace.

Nvidia's stock is up roughly 10% over the past year, though still trading 17.5% below its May high. Its market cap peaked then at around $5.7 trillion.
