The explosive growth in demand for AI computing power has led to a severe shortage of indium phosphide (InP) substrates and epitaxial wafers, with prices in the fourth quarter expected to surge by more than 10%, marking the largest single increase in history. Bottlenecks in upstream substrate production capacity are difficult to resolve quickly, making the supply-demand imbalance hard to address in the short term. Suppliers have stated bluntly that even if buyers are willing to pay a premium, inventory may still not be available.
