Jensen Huang: The semiconductor industry may need to expand to 10 times its current scale over the next decade
BlockBeats news, on July 26, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said in an interview with Bloomberg’s podcast that South Korea is in a “golden era,” and its semiconductor and industrial capabilities can help build global AI infrastructure. NVIDIA has entered into multiple collaborations with SK Group, and the scale of future business in memory procurement, AI supercomputers, and data center construction is expected to exceed 500 billion US dollars. NVIDIA will purchase large quantities of memory chips from SK Hynix for consecutive years and will jointly promote the technology roadmap from HBM2, HBM3, HBM3E, HBM4, HBM4E to subsequent products. Meanwhile, SK Telecom plans to expand its AI cloud infrastructure to up to 2 gigawatts in the near future, with NVIDIA selling it supercomputers. The cooperation includes both NVIDIA purchasing memory and SK Group procuring AI infrastructure.
Jensen Huang believes that as AI agents and robots begin to use computers on a large scale, chip demand will no longer be driven solely by human users. In the next about 10 years, the global semiconductor industry may need to expand to 10 times its current size. At present, resources such as HBM and other memory, land, power, and data center construction are all in short supply; the industry may have the capacity to double annually, but expanding faster will be very difficult. The entire industry may be able to double supply each year, but land, power, and factory construction cannot expand as quickly as consumer electronics, so AI infrastructure construction may continue to progress at a limited pace over the next decade.
Speaking about US-China AI competition, Jensen Huang said both countries have outstanding AI researchers and, although resources, conditions, and restrictions differ, both will continue to drive advances in AI technology. The number of AI researchers trained in China each year may exceed the total for the rest of the world combined; the United States still needs to keep learning, cooperating, and maintaining competition.
