Glonghui, July 23 - NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has issued a warning to the Trump administration and other policymakers: do not formulate regulatory policies based on panic toward artificial intelligence (AI) reminiscent of science fiction. He believes that overreacting at the regulatory level will hinder the real-world application of AI technology and weaken America's competitive advantage.
During an interview, Jensen Huang strongly criticized AI "doomsday" theories, indirectly refuting statements from other tech CEOs who have repeatedly emphasized the catastrophic risks AI might bring.
"The notion that AI will end human civilization is complete nonsense; claims that it will eliminate half of the jobs in the United States are equally unfounded," Huang said. He pointed out that the truly greater risk lies in panic-mongering, which makes businesses and workers afraid to adopt AI.
Jensen Huang called on policymakers to seek opinions from all sides, rather than only listening to one or two corporate executives, and not to restrict AI technology based on hypothetical scenarios that have yet to occur.
He also implicitly suggested that some companies are pushing for regulatory rules in the name of safety to serve their own interests: "Some companies are hoping the government will implement regulations that favor them and allow them to profit."
When asked whether he is concerned this administration might overregulate, Huang gave an affirmative answer.
Anthropic and OpenAI have been lobbying Washington to be highly vigilant against the potential risks posed by advanced AI systems. Many critics argue that such safety campaigns are essentially aimed at consolidating the market monopoly position of the two labs.
