  1. On Thursday, the Indian rupee closed at around 96.57 against the US dollar, virtually unchanged from the previous day, lingering near a two-month low throughout the session. State-owned banks were observed selling US dollars, which the market generally believed to be the Reserve Bank of India intervening to stabilize the exchange rate.
  2. Brent crude oil surged about 4% that day to above $98 per barrel, approaching the psychological barrier of $100. The Houthis claimed responsibility for attacking two Saudi oil tankers, triggering market concerns that global supply disruptions could spread beyond the Strait of Hormuz. Persistently high oil prices pose significant risks to India, potentially fueling inflation, dragging down growth, and widening the current account deficit.
  3. Although Brent prices had once fallen to near $70 last month, escalating hostilities in the Middle East have reignited the oil price rally and prompted investors to increase short positions on the rupee. Surveys show rupee shorts have climbed to their highest level in over a month.
  4. Institutions have pointed out that geopolitical tensions and the resulting oil price surge have recently led to the unwinding of long rupee positions. The rupee will remain exposed to oil price volatility and changes in risk sentiment. The stagflationary effect of high oil prices may also trigger combined capital outflows from stock and bond markets.
  5. India’s benchmark stock index fell for the fourth consecutive day, while the 10-year government bond yield briefly hit a one-month high during intra-day trading. Globally, traders are awaiting signals from the European Central Bank meeting. European stock markets and US equity futures showed weakness, in sharp contrast with the performance of most Asian markets.
